Forklift terminals still hold up to heavy use for City Furniture

City Furniture had been using the same reliable forklift terminals for more than nine years at a distribution center supporting its 15 stores and nine showrooms. When the time came to evaluate newer models from the same vendor against two competitive offerings, the company tested all three systems in the live environment of the DC.

The company ultimately upgraded to newer models of the reliable but aging terminals. The new rugged industrial computers keep the company’s state-of-the-art distribution center running at peak efficiency.

“Support issues around the warehouse pickers have dropped tremendously, allowing us to focus on other aspects of the company,” says Ricky Maharaj, network administrator for City Furniture. “In a fast-paced, rugged environment, operations depend on equipment that is durable, able to sustain rough usage, and can maintain superior efficiency.”

The customer and supplier worked closely to design a customized interface on the new operating system, which works seamlessly with the existing warehouse management system (WMS). The interface reduces configuration, maintenance time, and the risk associated with moving to a new operating system.

Whether employees are pulling product for pick-up or delivery, assembling a showroom display, or putting away new merchandise, the system maintains an accurate, real-time inventory. The customer was also able to eliminate licensing costs for anti-virus software it no longer needed. The terminals also feature battery technology to enable uninterrupted operation of WMS applications during forklift battery changes.
