Sarcos Robotics Company Profile

Battery-powered robotic exoskeleton.

Battery-powered robotic exoskeleton.

Sarcos is the first and only company in the world to produce a full-body, powered robotic exoskeleton that increases strength and endurance for a human operator. The Guardian® XO® has been in development for more than 20 years, and Sarcos has invested more than $175 million into its R&D. An early prototype of the exoskeleton was named as one of TIME’s “50 Best Inventions of 2010.”

Key features and selling points of the Guardian XO include its intuitive controls, which are modeled after human movement and make operation of the XO easy and seamless; human-like dexterity, which allows the XO to operate in complex, unstructured terrain; and autonomous power, which enables near-continuous operation of the XO using hot-swappable batteries. The XO can also support up to 100 percent of the load the human is bearing—up to 200 lbs.—as well as the weight of the suit itself.

The Guardian XO can be optionally equipped with customizable scaled dexterous end effectors and force feedback features, so the operator can perform highly precise tasks with heavy tools or components based on the particular requirements for the industry or job he/she is performing.

Key Product Features

  • The Guardian® XO® is the world’s first full-body, battery-powered industrial exoskeleton which can safely lift and manipulate up to 200 lbs. to augment human productivity while increasing safety. One person combined with one Guardian XO can perform the output equivalent of 4-10 workers.
  • The Guardian XO contains more than 120 sensors that detect an operator’s movements within a millisecond, reducing latency and eliminating the need for sensors to be affixed on the operator. Because the Guardian XO supports natural, fluid, intuitive movement, it requires relatively minimal training.
  • Sarcos’ proprietary technological advancements have reduced the electrical consumption to under 400W using two lithium ion batteries, now consuming roughly the same amount of power as an LED big-screen television, whereas earlier iterations of the exoskeleton required over 6,800W of power. The batteries are also hot-swappable, enabling near-continuous operation.

Meet Guardian XO

The Guardian XO full-body exoskeleton is the world’s first battery-powered industrial robot to combine human intelligence, instinct, and judgment with the power, endurance, and precision of machines.

Set to transform the way work gets done, the Guardian XO industrial exoskeleton augments operator strength without restricting freedom of movement to boost productivity while dramatically reducing injuries.

Expanding the Limits of Human Potential

Born of a fundamental need to safely enable humans to be more productive, the Guardian XO full-body industrial exoskeleton robot is the perfect synergy of human and machine. It is revolutionizing the way work gets done.

Uniquely suited for safer, more productive manufacturing/assembly, construction, field service, and warehouse/logistics use cases, the Guardian XO enables a single person to deliver the productivity of many, while significantly reducing the risk of occupational injury.

The Guardian XO exoskeleton makes light work of heavy-duty tasks, empowering the operator to safely lift and manipulate up to 200 pounds (90 kilograms) without fatigue or strain.

Designed for Added Strength and Endurance

  • Full-body, powered-design reduces operator metabolic output and physical strain by offloading 100% of the exoskeleton’s weight during use
  • Addresses the 35 lb ~ 200 lb (15 kg to 90 kg) “lift gap” across a wide range of industrial processes
  • Robotic suit amplifies operator strength by a factor of up to 20x (with maximum payload of up to 200 lb) and can also enable smoother lifting motion by dynamically compensating for gravity and inertia (for up to 100 lb per arm or 50 lb per arm when lifting at full extension)

Battery-powered for Mobile Performance & Uninterrupted Use

  • Onboard power source offers up to 8 hours of operation on a single charge
  • Hot-swappable battery design extends operational uptime and flexibility
  • XO® Pod docking station facilitates battery charging as well as easy don/doff operation and configurations for transport/shipping
  • Supports modular and user-selectable end effectors

Advanced Control Systems for Enhanced Maneuverability & Mobility

  • “Get-out-of-the-way” control system uses robot-integrated sensors to eliminate latency, detecting operator movements within milliseconds
  • 24 Degrees of Freedom (DOFs) allow the operator to move freely and naturally in unstructured environments where larger machinery is unable to access
  • Equipped with user-friendly Operator Control Interface (OCI) for user controls and diagnostic notification display
  • “Hands-free” mode allows operator to lock the suit’s arms and simultaneously complete dexterous tasks requiring human hands, while carrying a heavy load

Ergonomic, Safety-first Features for Operator Comfort & Injury Prevention

  • In the event of sudden power loss, redundant hardware and software limit-stops enable “passive braking” to prevent operator injury
  • Highly responsive control system enables operator to fluidly execute fall-prevention motions such as stumble-recovery
  • Robotic suit can be donned and doffed unassisted in less than 30 seconds, with additional provisions for sudden egress
  • Can accommodate additional, customer-specialized protective gear; also equipped with lifting loop for docking and to enable attachment of fall-prevention device (FPD)
