Planning the rated capacity is important when selecting the right yard ramp to ensure safe capacity for now and for future growth. Capacity rating should include the forklift weight and max cargo capacity of the forklift. Capacities range from 16,000 to 100,000 lbs. depending on the model. Steel units are offered with a higher capacity rating than aluminum. Light weight and anti-corrosive quality is some of best features of aluminum.

The standard overall ramp widths range from 72” up to 95” with a usable width of 66” to 87”. Industry standard lengths are 30’ all incline or a 30’ ramp with 6’ level-off with a 36’ total. The level-off allows the fork truck forks to enter the trailer parallel with the bed of the trailer. Both designs are offered with a 16” lip for the landing of the ramp to be supported by the trailer bed. Safety chains are utilized to secure the ramp to the trailer. Safety curbs are available from 4” to 8”.

Both portable Yard Ramps can be positioned by one person utilizing the forklift. Positioning is accomplished by the forklift loop or tow bar. The forklift loop allows for easier maneuvering over the tow bar. Tow bar is easier when moving a longer distance. Standard yard ramps are designed usually to stay in the yard with a maximum tow rate of 4 mph. The portable unit lip is supported and float with the suspension of the trailer. These units are available with a variety of wheel sets, 9” steel wheels, 18” hard rubber or 27” pneumatic tires. Height adjustment is accomplished by hand crank or hydraulic hand pump allowing for a service range of 30” to 62” depending on the model. Edge of dock levelers are available as an option for the end of the ramp when a fixed vertical leg set is utilized. Typically the unit is positioned into place as a loading / unloading staging dock area and the truck trailer backs up to it with the same practice as with a loading dock.
